Many of the King Day events are centered in the King Historic District in the Auburn Avenue area, including Monday morning’s annual commemorative service at Ebenezer Baptist Church and the march and rally on Auburn Avenue Monday afternoon. The yearly “Salute to Greatness” is a highlight, too, but this King Center fundraiser starts at $200 a ticket. The majority of the events are free, and they’re a happening all over the metro Atlanta area. Below is just a sampling of the events surrounding the King holiday. “Prophets.” In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Sandy Springs Christian Church presents Brad Sherrill one-man show, which brings the words of Isaiah and Jeremiah to life. 7 p.m. Jan. 15. “Salute to Greatness” Awards Dinner. The King Center’s primary fundraising initiative and one of the Center’s highest honors. The awards recognize national and/or international individuals and corporations that exemplify excellence in their leadership and have demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of King. Lutheran Day of Service 2011. This is a free activity sponsored by Lutherans who wish to serve. You are not required to bring anything other that your willingness to serve. The 11th annual Gwinnett County Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. The theme of this year’s parade is “Your Character Builds Your Future.” Sponsored by the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County. 9:30 a.m. Jan. 17. Lawrenceville Historic Courthouse, 185 Crogan St., Lawrenceville.
Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Commemorative Service. Tributes to the life and legacy of King from national and international leaders. A 12’ x 19’ JumboTron will broadcast the service live. It will be positioned in front of the Martin Luther King Historic Site Rose Garden for visitors in the Historic District. Keynote speaker is Martin Luther King, III. Other confirmed participants include U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, U.S. Rep. John Lewis and singers Rev. Wintley Phipps and LeAndria Johnson. Cobb County’s 25th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The holiday event is free and open to the public and includes the annual presentation of the “Living the Dream” award to a community member who exemplifies the ideals King stood for. The event, titled “Keeping the Dream Alive: Continuing the Journey,” is sponsored by Cobb County NAACP and Cobb County Government. 10 a.m. Jan. 17. Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, 548 S. “Keeping the Dream Alive: Continuing the Journey – The Next Movement.” A march and rally on Auburn Avenue between Peachtree and Jackson streets. Emory Celebrates King Week. Emory University’s annual celebration of the life, work and interests of Martin Luther King Jr. features a range of service, education, entertainment and memorial activities. All events are free and open to the public. It kicks off on Jan. 17 with a day of service known as “Emory’s Day On,” followed by a panel discussion at 7 p.m. in Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Road on “Open Doors and Open Minds: The intersection of race and gender in service.” The popular jazz vesper service featuring Dwight Andrews and the Atlanta Jazz Chorus is 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in Cannon Chapel. Andrew Young, former Atlanta mayor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, will give the keynote address at 4 p.m. Jan. 18 in Cannon Chapel. Ecumenical service celebrating the life of Martin Luther King at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25, in the Old Church, Oxford College, in Oxford, Ga. Keynote address will be given by the Rev. Bridgette Young.
