A grief-stricken Staten Island woman hired a "hit man" to murder two doctors and nurses she blamed for her father's death -- saying she wanted them "to suffer like her father suffered," stunning court documents revealed yesterday.
"When the [hit man] asked the defendant Morena Costello about what the defendant wanted to do . . . Costello picked up her father's death certificate, pointing to the word 'Death,' and asked, 'Can you read this part right here?" according to a Brooklyn federal-court criminal complaint.
"When the [hit man] asked if she wanted them killed, she wrote a note that said, 'Just do it.' "
Costello told [the hit man], in sum and substance, that the two doctors and two nurses were responsible for the death of her father and that she wanted them 'to suffer like her father suffered,' " the complaint said.
But her deadly desire for revenge on the four Staten Island University Hospital staffers was thwarted last Thursday because the "hit man" she met that day and gave a $400 down payment turned out to be an undercover federal agent, the complaint said.
Costello, 38, was ordered held without bond on murder-for-hire charges yesterday pending a mental-health exam.
Costello "has been extremely distraught since the death of her father," Bella Costello, last January after entering Staten Island University Hospital with heart problems, said her defense lawyer, Mildred Whalen. "This case stemmed from mental-health issues."
Joseph Nicola, a Costello family friend, said the clan had "a big fight" with SIU staff when Bella -- a musician and father of five -- was transferred into the cardiac-care unit because they worried about him being kept lying in bed.
